Let’s talk about fragrance — because not all “good smells” are created equal.
Fragrance is more than vibes. When you smell something, those aroma molecules travel through the olfactory system, which is directly connected to the brain and nervous system. That’s why scent can change mood, focus, and how regulated you feel almost instantly. It’s also why what you’re smelling matters.
Conventional fragrances are often designed for one thing: consistency at scale. They’re inexpensive, extremely strong, and easy to reproduce by the millions. That usually means synthetic aroma chemicals, many of which are bundled under the single word “fragrance.” It’s efficient. It’s cheap. It’s everywhere.
Natural fragrances and essential oils are… none of those things!!
They’re more expensive, more delicate, harder to work with, and wildly less predictable. Plant materials vary by harvest, climate, and season. Some oils take pounds and pounds of raw material to produce a tiny amount of usable extract. And when you remove things like phthalates, fillers, and fixatives, you lose that “chemical loudness” people are used to.
But here’s the upside: you gain balance.
Phthalate-free, all-natural fragrance blends are softer, closer to the plant, and easier on the nervous system — especially in enclosed spaces like cars or small rooms. They’re designed to be smelled, not to linger aggressively or overpower everything in a five-foot radius.
This is where cost vs. benefit comes in.
Yes, natural fragrance costs more — significantly more. It requires higher-quality raw materials, smaller batch blending, and more testing to get the scent just right. There’s no shortcut button. But the benefit is a scent that feels intentional instead of intrusive. Supportive instead of overwhelming. Something you can live with — not something you need to “get used to.”
I choose natural, phthalate-free fragrance not because it’s trendy, but because it aligns with how scent actually interacts with the body. It’s about respecting the fact that smell is biology — not just decoration.
At the end of the day, fragrance should enhance your space, your mood, and your routine. Not hijack them.
And that’s a trade-off I’m happy to make.
